Hello Community,

Change keeps testing every organization, and some handle it far better than others.

The Agility Project, a study of 325 companies led by industrial-organizational psychologist Elaine Pulakos, PhD, shows what sets them apart:

  • 150% higher return on invested capital and 500% higher return on equity for the publicly traded companies that act on change first and recover quickly from setbacks.

  • Seven durable human skills make that kind of agility possible in people, and they hold their value as AI takes on more of the work.

Let’s meet them.

Inside this Edition:

  • The 7 Skills Behind Workforce Agility

  • Last days for BUILD early-bird pricing

  • Free AI bootcamp starts November 3

  • NEW Flexible Learning is here for Premium members

  • 30% off HRFest Canada for Hacking HR members

  • 🎁 Holiday Gift Guide: gifts HR actually approved

WORKFORCE AGILITY

The 7 Skills Behind Workforce Agility

Infographic titled “The seven skills behind workforce agility” showing the seven skills behind workforce agility, each with its definition: resilience, creative problem solving, adaptability, continuous upskilling, interpersonal savvy, cultural versatility, and critical thinking. They are all durable human skills that help people adapt through change.

These are all durable human skills that hold their value as work changes.

The goal of the Agility Project was to understand what makes an organization sustain high performance and be agile during change and disruption.

They found that seven skills shape how people move through uncertainty, and how fast they recover from setbacks. But they also influence proactiveness to find new opportunities created by change and how quickly they adjust.

Most of us use these skills every week, but rarely name them.

  • Resilience: How long did it take you to get back to work after your last big project fell apart?

  • Creative Problem Solving: When your team’s usual approach stopped working, what was the most unexpected idea on the table?

  • Adaptability: When managers tell you a new process doesn’t fit their teams, how fast do you change the plan?

  • Continuous Upskilling: What’s the last skill you started learning before your job required it?

  • Interpersonal Savvy: Before a tough budget conversation, how much time do you spend working out what the other side needs to hear?

  • Cultural Versatility: When your company acquires a team in another country, how much do you learn about how they decide before changing how they work?

  • Critical Thinking: When customer complaints spike, how many questions do you ask before deciding what went wrong?

These are durable, inherently human skills. As AI takes on more of the work and technical skills expire faster, Pulakos notes that every one of them is “something that AI and technology simply can’t do well.” That makes them the skills worth hiring for, developing, and assessing.

➡️ Where HR can start: Pick one critical role. Decide which of the seven skills would change performance most in it, then check whether your hiring and development processes measure any of them.

Skills also need the right environment to show up. Leaders and teams create it with clear priorities, candor, and room to experiment.

What Do High-Performing Organizations Do Differently?

In The Agility Advantage, Elaine Pulakos, PhD, CEO of PDRI by Pearson, walks through the Agility Project’s findings, the stories behind them, and her answers to HR leaders’ questions on assessing the seven skills.

Skills like these grow faster in a room full of people working on the same problems. That room opens in Scottsdale next March.

Free Bootcamp: Build Your AI-Powered Project Management Systems

How many hours did you spend last week turning a brief into a plan, chasing status updates and writing the weekly report by hand?

Most project tools track tasks. The planning, the reporting and the risk-spotting still land on YOU.

On November 3–4, Enrique Rubio will build a complete AI-powered project management system live, from an empty database to a working app, in two 2-hour sessions. You’ll see how to build:

  • An AI planning layer: Turns a rough brief into phases, tasks, owners and dependencies.

  • Live dashboards: Views for executives, teams and individual projects.

  • A status engine: Drafts your weekly update from live project data.

  • A risk radar: Flags slipping dates, overloaded owners and stalled tasks.

  • A project assistant: Connected to Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack.

You watch the full build, then rebuild your own using a sample dataset we provide. Every tool has a free tier, and you don’t need to set anything up beforehand.

🎓 Free for all Hacking HR members, with a certificate of completion and SHRM, HRCI and IHRIM credits.
