Hello Community,

$660 million.

That's how much the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recovered for victims of employment discrimination in fiscal year 2025.

And that's only part of the financial impact. Legal fees, lost productivity, employee turnover, and reputational damage can add to the cost.

How many workplace problems show warning signs long before they become formal complaints or discrimination claims?

Today, we're sharing Emtrain's newly released 2027 Workplace Culture Report, which offers an interesting perspective. Drawing on responses from hundreds of thousands of employees, the research reveals gaps between how people describe their workplace culture and what they experience when disagreements arise, people cross boundaries, or someone challenges authority.

WORKPLACE CULTURE

What Workplace Culture Data Reveals About Organizational Risk

Infographic connecting workplace culture warning signs to potential organizational risks. Three rows illustrate the relationships. First, conflict, gossip, stereotyping, and exclusion can damage relationships and collaboration, potentially leading to weaker teamwork, lower productivity, employee relations escalation, and harassment or discrimination exposure. Second, hesitation to speak up, authority shielding, and disrespect can leave concerns unresolved, weakening trust, accountability, and decision-making. Third, questions about fairness and limited responses to feedback can undermine confidence in leadership, contributing to disengagement, unwanted turnover, underused talent, and performance risks. Hacking HR and Emtrain logos appear at the top.

A respectful workplace doesn't mean everyone has the same experience.

Employees may generally treat one another well while still encountering conflict, unfair treatment, or situations where speaking up feels uncomfortable.

Emtrain's findings highlight three areas worth watching.

1️⃣ Conflict and exclusion: Social and political disagreements are creating tension between colleagues, affecting how peers treat and include one another. These patterns point to growing employee relations concerns and increased exposure to harassment and discrimination claims. .

2️⃣ Silence and power: Employees are hesitant to challenge inappropriate behavior, while those in positions of authority may face less accountability. This creates blind spots for HR, allowing misconduct to go unreported and increasing the risk of escalation, retaliation concerns, and legal exposure.

3️⃣ Fairness and accountability: Employees are questioning whether opportunities are awarded fairly and whether managers act on feedback. Weak accountability and perceived bias threaten trust in leadership, increasing the risk of disengagement, unwanted turnover, and discrimination claims. While 83.3% feel safe disagreeing with their manager, only 57.3% say their manager adjusts their behavior after receiving constructive criticism.

What Can HR Do With These Findings?

Start by asking three questions:

Hacking HR and Emtrain infographic presenting three steps for identifying workplace culture risks. Step 1, “What are employees telling us?” recommends looking beyond formal complaints by examining surveys, anonymous comments, and feedback gathered during training. Step 2, “Where are the patterns?” advises comparing responses across teams, locations, and management levels to identify concentrated concerns. Step 3, “What needs investigation?” recommends examining patterns alongside other evidence before deciding how to respond. Dotted arrows connect all three steps to a final question: “You've identified the signals. What should you do next?”

The goal is to understand where risks may exist and make better-informed decisions about what to do next.

The headline highlights rising political conflict at work and associated harassment and discrimination risks. Four report highlights are listed: how social and political conflict signals workplace risks, culture benchmarks across four leadership competencies, insights from more than 28,000 anonymous employee comments, and five priority actions for HR and Compliance leaders in 2027. On the right, the report cover features five employees gathered around a workplace table, with a pink download button beneath it.

How people treat one another at work has a lasting impact. Helping employees feel valued and connected matters, too, especially in healthcare.

HEALTHCARE RETENTION STARTS WITH FEELING VALUED

Healthcare organizations are under enormous pressure to retain their people. For hospitals, turnover is also a significant business cost.

  • 56.8% of departing hospital employees had less than two years of service

  • RN turnover costs the average hospital $5.19 million a year.

Kudos released a new guide that explores where recognition can make a difference, from helping new hires build connection to making appreciation more visible across clinical and non-clinical teams.

It also includes practical steps HR leaders can use to build recognition into the realities of healthcare work, without adding another initiative to an already overloaded workforce.
